Two law enforcement officers who stole over UAH 799,000 from a deceased lonely pensioner during investigative actions will be brought to court in Zaporizhzhia. The indictment has now been sent to court.

In October 2023, law enforcement officers were called by neighbours who suspected that a lonely man had died.
"The pensioner did die, and law enforcement officials at the scene decided to take advantage of the situation. They appointed some people they knew as witnesses and searched the apartment without their participation. They took the $20,000 and bank cards they found.
To use the cards, law enforcement officers also took the deceased's mobile phone. Through it, they gained access to the accounts and subsequently withdrew another 65 thousand hryvnias. The total amount of money they stole from the deceased was UAH 799 thousand," the statement said.
The law enforcement officers are accused of abuse of office for the purpose of obtaining undue advantage, large-scale theft committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons, theft of official documents, and unauthorised interference with the operation of an information (automated) system (Article 364(2), Article 185(4), Article 357(1), Article 361(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The sanction of the articles provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 8 years.
One of the partners was also found to have unregistered ammunition during the search.
Therefore, he is additionally charged with possession, purchase of ammunition without a legal permit, legalisation of property acquired by criminal means and drawing up false official documents (part 1 of Article 263, part 1 of Article 209, part 1 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Currently, one offender has been dismissed from the law enforcement agencies, the other has been suspended from office.
