A Russian informant who gathered intelligence on Ukrainian Defense Forces near the Black Sea has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, based on evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the SSU press centre.
How was the traitor detained?
As noted, SSU cyber specialists detained him at his place of residence in Mykolaiv in early 2024, when he returned from a reconnaissance mission.
According to the case file, the offender spied on the port bases and raid directions of the Armed Forces and State Border Guard Service warships.
The occupiers also hoped to obtain from the informant the geolocation of reserve command posts of Ukrainian ground units performing tasks on the front line.
What is known about him?
The investigation revealed that the enemy agent was a local unemployed man who came to the attention of the aggressor because of his anti-Ukrainian comments on Telegram channels.
After being recruited, the man began to walk around the coastal area of the port city, where he recorded the locations of Ukrainian defenders and marked the corresponding coordinates on Google maps.
During the search of the detainee's apartment, a mobile phone was seized, from which he was in contact with his curator, a special service of the aggressor country.
Trial of a traitor
Based on the materials of cyber specialists and SSU investigators, the court sentenced the informant to the maximum sentence under the articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
part 3 of Article 114-2 (unauthorised dissemination of information on the direction, movement of weapons, movement, relocation or deployment of the AFU committed under martial law);
part. 1, 3, Art. 436-2 (justification, recognition of the lawfulness, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).
