Details
A 41-year-old man arrived to leave Ukraine and, whilst undergoing passport control, presented a document identifying him as a citizen of the Syrian Arab Republic. However, during the check, inspectors established that the man also held Ukrainian citizenship.
In order to avoid exit restrictions and cross the border unhindered, the man offered the female border guard an unlawful benefit of 3,000 US dollars.
The border guard refused the bribe, recorded the fact of the offer and passed the information on to officers of the National Police. The offender’s actions constitute a criminal offence – "the offering, promising or giving of an unlawful benefit to a public official".
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine emphasises that the agency adheres to a policy of zero tolerance towards corruption and will respond firmly to any attempts to bribe its staff.
