The tragedy occurred in Zhytomyr, Censor.NET reports citing the State Emergency Service press office.Publication contains graphic photos not recommended for unstable persons, children and pregnant women.
"On Dec. 18, at 8:20 a.m. the rescue service "101" received a message from Zhytomyr residents that bodies of two men were found under the ice in Teteriv river. The rescue squad of six persons immediately left on site," the report reads.
The rescuers established that the bodies were situated in about 200 meters from the shore. Getting to them was posing risk to the rescuers as the ice was not strong enough. The rescuers tried to get there by a rubber boat.
The rescuers smashed a hole in the ice with axes and hooked the dead men. The bodies were taken to the shore with a rope.

Police officers are examining the circumstances of the accident.
State Emergency Service warns: "Dear citizens! When stepping up on frozen water, take a stick to check the strength of the ice. Do not check it with your feet!"
