Mitten of peace: Japanese artist together with children from occupied territories made mural in Mariupol. PHOTOS

On Saturday, July 29, a new mural titled "Mitten" was unveiled in Mariupol on the 25th anniversary of Ukraine-Japan relations.

The mural was painted on the wall of the school No. 68 by Japanese artist Miyazaki Kensuke together with kids affected by the conflict in the east of Ukraine.

Kensuke paints murals all around the world. His artworks have appeared in Kenya, East Timor, Kyiv, and now Mariupol.

The school No. 68 has been chosen on purpose - it was one of the buildings that suffered from shelling in 2015.

The idea of the mural is around a folk tale about a mitten. It symbolized unity and solidarity of Mariupol residents towards IDPs.

Mariupol has welcomed a lot of IDPs, Kensuke said. The artist wanted to show how inclusive and tolerant Ukrainian society is, when people from different areas can live in peace, he said.
