In February 2023, Vitalii Veres, a 29-year-old soldier of the National Guard, was seriously wounded in Bakhmut in a battle with the occupiers and completely lost his eyesight.
According to Censor.NET, journalists of the Hromadske project met with a Ukrainian soldier who has already undergone more than ten surgeries. The latter - on his ears, because he lost his eardrums and partially his hearing from the explosion of an anti-tank missile. Ahead of him is a skin graft, prosthetics of the right eye and surgery on a broken collarbone. But the man's biggest dream is to restore his eyesight with the help of the latest technologies. However, even in February, his relatives had only to dream that Vitalii would simply survive. For two weeks, he was in intensive care in critical condition. When he came to his senses, he panicked a lot - he had his hands and feet tied, his eyes bandaged and his mouth sewn shut. I thought I was in captivity. During the meeting with journalists, Ukrainian soldier also spoke about the problems faced by wounded soldiers and reproached state structures for insufficient care.
