Today, I visited two of our regions — Chernihiv and Sumy. This is a strategic direction, the border with Russia.
I began the day in Yahidne — the anniversary of the village’s liberation from the occupiers was marked just a few days ago. It’s important that many local facilities have already been restored, new houses are being built, and work is underway to preserve the memory of how the Russians held the entire village in the school basement. It was one of the most cynical and inhuman crimes of this war. We will never forget it. I also visited Chernihiv and met with representatives of all local communities in the region.
There are many questions. And especially in the communities that border Russia and are virtually constantly under fire. Today, we decided to allocate additional funds to support all such hromadas - border hromadas, hromadas on the border with the enemy, as well as hromadas near the frontline. Next week, government officials must decide on this: additional funds - tangible funds - for each such community for the most urgent tasks.
Today, I’m in the Sumy region — one of the directions where much is being decided. I wanted to be here personally, to thank our troops in person: the Air Assault Forces — the 80th and 82nd Brigades; the Marines — the 36th Brigade; and everyone carrying out missions in the Kursk direction. Those who are defending our country and our Sumy region from Russia’s constant attempts to breach Ukraine from these areas.
I want to thank all our soldiers, all our sergeants, every one of our officers who are fighting heroically in these directions. Since August of last year, our units have been conducting combat operations on enemy territory — this is one of Ukraine’s greatest achievements in this war. It is absolutely just to take the war back to where it started. Today we spoke with unit commanders operating in this area — about key needs, additional supplies, equipment, drones, operational matters. We are working to strengthen our positions. We know what the enemy is counting on — and in any case, we will defend our country, our independence, and our people," Zelenskyy said.
