On 1 April, students at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv took to the streets to protest against the current rector, Volodymyr Buhrov.

The protest is linked to the publication of intimate videos allegedly showing Buhrov with one of the university’s lecturers.

All this is taking place against the backdrop of the rector’s election. Buhrov links this to the election campaign.

Protesters demanded a public response from the university administration regarding the scandals involving the university’s leadership.

Buhrov rejects the accusations and says he has no intention of defending himself based on information from anonymous Telegram channels.

"I emphasise that all these issues must be dealt with through legal channels. When the student parliament asked me to comment on what was happening, in my opinion, in a manipulative manner, I replied that I do not comment on what appears on anonymous Telegram channels, nor on matters to which I have no connection," said the rector.

Buhrov says he has no conflict with the students, but there are disagreements between certain student parliament leaders and the administration.

Later, the rector went out to the students and invited them into his office, where he stated that he had no intention of resigning.

"If I win the appeal, I will stand for re-election as rector. If I lose, I will step down early," he added.

Buhrov lodged an appeal because he disagrees with the ruling of the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv, which fined him for allegedly providing false information in his declaration. The court believes he should have declared the car he was using, whilst Bugrov himself maintains there was no violation and is asking for the decision to be reviewed.
