Maidan massacre: prosecution reveals new security cameras video. VIDEO
The Sviatoshynskyi district court continues the trial of five ex-Berkut soldiers accused of the mass killings of activists on Instytutska Street in February 2014. Yesterday, Sept. 13, several episodes regarding two Heavenly Hundred Heroes were examined.
Censor.NET reports referring to 5 Channel.Volodymyr Melnychuk, an activist, was shot dead near Zhovtnevyi Palats (the October Palace) at about 5 p.m., Feb. 20. At that moment, the active phase of confrontation between Maidan protesters and security forces had ended.
The court watched one and the same footage for seven times. It shows a security forces soldier shooting at unarmed and defenseless Kyiv resident Volodymyr Melnychuk in front of activists and his wife Mariia.
According to the examination results, the man was hit with an 8-9 mm bullet, that is from a Kalashnikov rifle. He had no chances to survive.
"The wound was caused by a gunshot. Supposedly, it was a 0.8-0.9 cm bullet. No signs of close range shot have been detected," Judge Serhii Diachuk noted.
The defendants, on the other hand, claim that unknowns were shooting from the nearby Ukraina hotel.
However, this time, the prosecution had another previously unreleased video recorded by the National Bank of Ukraine surveillance cameras. After it was shown, the Berkut officers no longer insisted on firing from Ukraina hotel, merely claiming that other security forces soldiers could be firing from behind the concrete barricades.
As noted, despite the resistance of the Berkut officers, the court granted a defense motion to establish the exact time of Melnychuk's last talk. Before his death, he spoke with his mother on the phone.
As reported, 26 Berkut soldiers have been indicted of the involvement in the killings of Maidan activists on Instytutska Street in Kyiv Feb. 20, 2014. Five of them have been arrested and tried, while more than 20 have escaped.
