European Union countries are working on the tenth package of sanctions against Russia, which is scheduled to come into effect in February, the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This was stated to agency Reuters by diplomatic sources, reports Censor.NЕТ with reference to "European truth".

The more hardline EU countries are already demanding new sanctions, which, among other things, should limit cooperation with Moscow in the field of nuclear fuel, ban imports of Russian diamonds, and reduce trade with Belarus, a Kremlin ally.

Senior diplomats from the three EU countries with a moderate stance on sanctions told Reuters that the next package of sanctions against Russia should be ready by the anniversary of the invasion on February 24.

They did not, however, discuss what those sanctions might include. "It's too early, we just got the ninth package," said a senior diplomat from another EU country.

No decisions on the tenth package of sanctions are expected at the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers on Monday, January 23. Instead, they will discuss the approval of the seventh tranche of military aid to Ukraine worth 500 million euros, which was previously blocked by Hungary.

In addition, Foreign Ministers are also expected to expand the sanctions list against Iran for human rights violations, and some EU countries are calling for even more action in response to Tehran's supply of drones used by Russia in Ukraine.

The media reported earlier that Brussels had accelerated work on the tenth package of sanctions and hoped to adopt it before the EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv.

According to the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the tenth package of sanctions will be mainly focused on closing loopholes and introducing significant consequences for those who circumvent EU sanctions.
