Trilateral gas talks: Naftohaz to grant Gazprom no special terms

Naftohaz does not expect any tangible results from the trilateral gas talks in Brussels today, but at the same time counts on the start of "real" negotiations.

Executive director of Naftohaz group Yurii Vitrenko said this at a press conference on Monday, Censor.NET reports citing DW.

Vitrenko argued that Ukraine is ready to facilitate gas transit in accordance with the EU legislation. "We are not ready for any special terms we used to have with Russia as they were actually enslaving for Ukraine," he said.

Vitrenko does not expect any concrete results as he believes there are no preconditions for them. First, the experts have to develop agreements which could be signed on political level. He also hopes that real transit talks will start today.

As reported earlier, Ukraine, the European Union and Russia are to discuss Monday further steps to agree on a new contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to the EU from 2020. The meeting is to be attended by Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič, Ukraine Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Naftohaz CEO Andrii Kobolev and Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak.
