South Africa will investigate supply of weapons from country to Russia

After the US ambassador accused South Africa of supplying weapons to the Russian Federation, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the creation of a commission to investigate the incident.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to Reuters.

"The President has decided to open an investigation due to the seriousness of the allegations, the degree of public interest and the impact of this matter on South Africa's international relations," the South African Presidential Administration said in a statement.

Ramaphosa is expected to receive the commission's report within eight weeks of its commencement.

The commission must find out who knew about the ship's arrival, what contents were loaded and unloaded, and "whether constitutional, legal or other obligations regarding the arrival of the cargo ship were complied with." This is a cargo ship that stopped at the Simonstown Naval Base and was there from December 6 to 8, 2022. In Washington, they are sure that the representatives of South Africa loaded weapons and ammunition on this ship, which then went to the Russian Federation.

It will be recalled that the US ambassador to the Republic of South Africa, Ruben Brigeti, said that South Africa supplied Russia with weapons and ammunition despite its declaration of neutrality.

In response, South Africa denied supplying arms to Russia and accused Brigeti of undermining relations between South Africa and the United States.

Later, the South African government added that it did not agree to the supply of weapons to Russia, but noted that some cases of illegal export did take place.
