Statements by French President Emmanuel Macron and reports on discussions in Paris give reason to believe that France is now more inclined to support Ukraine’s membership in NATO than before.

As Censor.NET reports with reference to the Voice of America, Le Mond writes about it.

According to the publication, France's policy regarding Ukraine's integration into Euro-Atlantic structures was the leading topic of the Defense Council's discussions at the presidential Elysee Palace on June 12.

Currently, the French government is currently considering "supporting the prospect of Ukrainian membership in NATO as a means of influencing the conflict and a way to bring Moscow and Kyiv to the negotiating table."

French politicians are also looking at Ukraine's accession to the European Union as a part of security guarantees for Ukraine, because, they believe in Paris, this can "dissuade Russia from continuing the war, or after the end of this war, prevent new aggression."

Le Mond writes that the idea of using Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration to influence current events is more of a diplomatic "tactic", but also notes that even this is a real change of heart in France.

"Paris is moving closer to the positions advocated by the countries of Central Europe, the majority of which (primarily Poland and the Baltic States) constantly insist on Ukraine joining NATO," the article says.
