Georgian parliament ’will not even consider’ resolution condemning Russia’s plan to build naval base in occupied Abkhazia

The parliamentary majority in Georgia "will not even consider" a draft resolution condemning the Kremlin’s plans to relocate some ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet to the port of Ochamchira in occupied Abkhazia.

This was stated by the Vice-Speaker of the Georgian Parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, Giorgi Volsky, Censor.NET reports citing Radio Liberty.

Volsky justified the decision of the parliamentary majority not to adopt the resolution by saying that Georgia "is in a difficult situation under the occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Russia", and in such circumstances, adopting such a resolution "would be a provocation".

Volsky made it clear that Aslan Bzhania's statement does not mean that a Russian naval base will be built in the port of Ochamchir, as Moscow "made similar statements back in 2009", but since then "no work has been done in Ochamchir to deepen the seabed or build the infrastructure needed for a naval base".

The draft resolution, prepared by independent MP Theona Akubardia and her colleagues from the opposition faction For Georgia, strongly "condemned Moscow's occupation of Georgia's sovereign territory in Abkhazia and South Ossetia", as well as its "militarisation, which directly threatens the national security of Georgia, the region and the entire Euro-Atlantic community".
