Baltic ambassadors demarche Poland over blockade of Ukrainian border

The ambassadors of the Baltic states in Warsaw have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Polish authorities over the fact that Polish truck drivers are blocking the movement of freight vehicles on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

According to Censor.NET, citing Ukrinform, this was reported by ERR.

"A meeting/demonstration of three ambassadors of the Baltic states at the Ministry of Infrastructure of Poland took place in Warsaw. We respect the right of truck drivers to rally. But, unfortunately, this has led to a difficult situation that creates problems for other carriers and additional difficulties for the Ukrainian economy. For our part, we are raising this issue with Poland and hope that a solution will be found in the near future in cooperation between Poland, Ukraine and the European Commission," said Estonian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Brita Kikas in response to ERR's question about Estonia's attitude to the border blockade.

In diplomacy, a demarche is an appeal by one government to another government to draw attention to something, often with proposals to take concrete action.

According to Brita Kikas, Estonia will continue its efforts to find a solution with the new Polish government.

"Foreign Minister Margus Tahkna had a conversation with former Polish Foreign Minister Johannes Rau. In addition, the new Polish foreign minister is scheduled to visit Tallinn in the near future, where this issue will be discussed," Kikas said.

The Estonian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman confirmed that the blockade of the Ukrainian border was also discussed at Tsakhkna's meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron on Monday.

As a reminder, on 6 November, Polish hauliers began a protest action on the Polish-Ukrainian border. The Korczowa-Krakowiec, Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska, and Dorohusk-Yagodyn checkpoints were blocked for freight traffic.
