Russia’s planning bombs are changing war on Ukraine’s eastern front - Independent

Russia’s new planning bombs proved to be devastating for Ukrainian defensive positions on or near the front line.
According to Censor.NET, citing the Independent, this was written by John Foreman, former British Defence Attaché in Moscow.
The article notes that the FAB is not as effective as the JDAM, but it is much cheaper. Finally, it is much more easily accessible to the Russian military than the JDAM is to Ukraine.
"The reasons for the recent Russian advance into Donetsk are multifaceted - Ukraine is facing a shortage of weapons and ammunition, and Western allies are dragging their feet on providing new funding and military assistance. The newly modified FAB-1500 warheads are causing considerable damage," Forman writes.
She adds that Ukrainian troops are fighting it as best they can, but need their Western allies to step up and provide more weapons, ammunition and air defence.
The article indicates that Russia's recently modified FAB-1500 warheads (the number is related to their weight in kilograms) have caused significant damage. Ukraine also uses guided bombs similar to the FAB, known as the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) system, but the number of US weapons is much smaller.
"They're basically dumb, unguided Soviet-era bombs with smart wings added to them to attack stationary targets with some degree of accuracy," said Forman, a former attaché.
The bomb can also be adjusted using satellite or laser navigation. This increases its accuracy.
