A report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), citing a Ukrainian UAV battalion commander, said that Russian troops were concentrating their attacks in the direction of Chasiv Yar, as the town is located at a dominant height.

"On 31 March, positional fighting continued near Bakhmut, but there were no confirmed changes on the front line. A Russian military blogger claimed that Russian troops had advanced near Bohdanivka (northwest of Bakhmut), although ISW found no evidence of this claim," it said.

At the same time, Hromadske Radio correspondent Yanina Lvutina, who recently returned from Chasiv Yar, said that about 800 civilians remain in the town.

"Currently, the occupiers are shelling the settlement very heavily. From what we know, they are trying to move closer to the town. The occupiers' desire is to capture Chasiv Yar and cut off the road that connects Bakhmut and Chasiv Yar and goes further to Kostiantynivka.

Now the occupiers are resorting to combined attacks, combined assaults. They are actively using not only manpower but also equipment. For the most part, the occupiers are bombarding the town with CABs and mortars. Chasiv Yar is very heavily destroyed, there are virtually no surviving residential buildings; many houses have huge holes in them, apparently due to the impact of large-calibre shells," she said.
