Scholz calls support for Ukraine matter of Germany’s historical responsibility

Supporting Ukraine is a matter of Germany's historical responsibility.
This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his speech on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on Saturday, 20 July, Spiegel reports, Censor.NET reports.
Scholz said that given its own history, Germany should stand firmly on the side of democracy and on the side of Ukraine, which is fighting for it today. In his speech, the politician also mentioned the courage of the Ukrainian people in the fight against Russia's full-scale aggression.
"Given our own history, there is only one place for Germany in this situation: on the side of Ukraine. In 2024, we cannot celebrate this 20th of July without thinking about the brave citizens of Ukraine who have been resisting Russia's criminal war of aggression for more than two years," Scholz said.
Referring to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Scholz said that the war is ongoing, "with which the Russian rulers openly pursue the goal of conquering Ukraine and destroying it as a sovereign country - 79 years after the end of World War II and 79 years after the entry into force of the United Nations Charter."
The Head of the German Government also called on Germans to be vigilant in defending democracy.
"Democracy thrives on the participation of citizens, their respect for each other and their opposition to all forms of hate and extremism. Those who fight against our democracy will always meet our resolute resistance," Scholz added.
