Ukraine will not be able to become NATO member in near future - Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Ukraine should not expect to join NATO in the near future because the United States refused to take this step.

This is reported by Deutsche Welle, Censor.NET informs.

Reportedly, the reason for this is the US refusal to support Ukraine's accession to the Alliance, which is currently a key factor in the decision.

Scholz also expressed hope that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine could resume after Donald Trump comes to power in the United States.

"It would be very good if this war were to end," he said.

Friedrich Merz also added that NATO does not accept new members who are at war, and suggested that this complicates the process of Ukraine's accession to the Alliance. At the same time, Merz supported granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union, which would significantly strengthen the country's security.

As a reminder, today, 10 February, a televised debate took place between the Social Democratic Party's candidate for prime minister Olaf Scholz and the leader of the Christian Democratic Union Friedrich Merz.
