Decision on elections should be made in Ukraine - Kellogg

Kellogg on the elections in Ukraine

The decision on whether to hold elections this year should be made by Ukraine itself, not by anyone outside of it.

This was stated by US President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, in response to a question from a DW correspondent about whether the United States would insist on holding elections in Ukraine this year, Censor.NET reports.

Kellogg emphasized that the decision to hold elections should be made in Ukraine.

"The question of elections in Ukraine should not be asked of me, it should be asked of your people, the country's leadership, the Verkhovna Rada. Many people have an opinion on this, but it is not someone else's decision, it is your (Ukraine's - ed.) decision. This question needs to be asked within the country," Trump's special envoy said.

As a reminder, during his speech at the Munich Security Conference, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that most Ukrainians do not want presidential elections to be held until the war in the country ends.

Earlier, Keith Kellogg said that the United States wants Ukraine to hold presidential and parliamentary elections after a possible ceasefire agreement is concluded.

Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova said that the United States had not discussed with the Ukrainian side the need to hold elections in the country by the end of 2025.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that there can be no elections in Ukraine during martial law. To do so, the Constitution and legislation must be changed.

US President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, called it a sign of a healthy democracy that elections can be held in a country even during a war. However, Kyiv should not hold them right now.
