Hasty end to war in Ukraine could bring US closer to NATO withdrawal - Bolton

John Bolton

Former US President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton has warned that a hasty peace in Ukraine could be close to capitulation to the Kremlin and pave the way for the US to withdraw from NATO.

This is reported by Politico, Censor.NET informs.

"I thought Trump would withdraw from NATO, and he hasn't done it yet, but you can hear the music starting to play. There will be a ceasefire, a militarized zone will be created, negotiations will begin, Ukraine will agree not to join NATO - this is a settlement that could actually be written in the Kremlin," he said.

Bolton also criticized the idea of sending a peacekeeping force, especially in the context of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's statements about the possibility of deploying British troops to Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire.

"I am against the deployment of peacekeeping forces. The experience of the United Nations has shown that as soon as you deploy peacekeeping forces, they can become a permanent part of the landscape, and in this case, lead to the de facto division of Ukraine, which may become de jure after some time," he explained.

The former Trump adviser emphasized that freezing the current front lines is dangerous and would actually mean giving up the return of Ukrainian territories.

"There is no absolute obligation to negotiate a ceasefire. So unless you're willing to give up any possibility of Ukraine getting its territory back, the idea of freezing the existing lines of control is potentially very dangerous," Bolton concluded.
