US wants to soften G7 statement on war in Ukraine - NYT

Aid to Ukraine may decrease regardless of the outcome of US presidential election

The United States insists on changing the wording in the joint statement of the Group of Seven (G7), proposing to reduce the emphasis on support for Ukraine.

This is reported by the New York Times, citing sources, Censor.NET informs.

It is noted that Canada took the initiative to draft the statement. The document contains a traditional pro-Ukrainian tone, but this week the United States proposed changes.

In particular, Washington called for removing references to:

  • Russia as an aggressor in the war against Ukraine;
  • Ukraine as a victim of a full-scale invasion.

According to the publication, diplomats are now working on new wording that will describe the war as "destructive" without clearly indicating Russia's responsibility.

According to the sources, negotiations on the final text may last until Monday, after which the draft will be made public.

It is also unknown whether President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be invited to participate in the virtual meeting of G7 leaders.

In addition, the United States wants to reduce references to violations of Ukraine's sovereignty and focus on security guarantees and Kyiv's integration into the EU as key factors for a stable peace.
