Rubio explains why US voted against UN resolution condemning Russian aggression

Why did US vote against UN collective resolution?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States voted against the UN resolution condemning Russian aggression because it was trying to bring both sides to the negotiating table and end the war.

He said this in a comment to Breitbart News, Censor.NET reports.

The United States voted against the collective resolution on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The US also abstained from voting on its own resolution.

"On the broader resolution, we think the UN needs to get back to its charter mission, which is the prevention and ending of war and conflict," Rubio explained.

According to the secretary of state, the United States does not consider it favourable to adopt anything in the UN that is ‘antagonistic to either side’. Washington is trying to bring both sides to the negotiating table. At the same time, he said, Ukraine allegedly did not agree.

Rubio noted that the United States has submitted its ‘compromise’ to the UN Security Council, which he believes is "very fair language and it basically says ‘war is a terrible thing.’"

He noted that the Russians did not veto it.

US resolution in the UN on the war in Ukraine

As a reminder, the United States submitted a draft UN resolution on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The document differs significantly from the version prepared by Ukraine and its European allies.

The US document does not mention Ukraine's territorial integrity and does not include any criticism of Russia.

The UN General Assembly supported the Ukrainian resolution on the war. The US and Russia voted against it.
