Trump administration will resume contacts with Ukraine when it is ready for peace - Rubio

Marco Rubio

On Sunday, March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that President Donald Trump and his team would resume dialogue with Ukrainian officials "when they are ready for peace."

The head of American diplomacy said this on the This Week program on ABC News, Censor.NET reports.

Rubio said that he had not spoken to either Zelenskyy or Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha after the Ukrainian delegation left Washington early after talking to Trump.

The secretary of state said that the United States is trying to get Putin to the negotiating table, and Trump is the only person who has a chance to do so, and Zelenskyy, according to him, has thwarted these efforts.

"Everybody here knows the history here from top to bottom. We understand it. We all understand this. But the question now is, can we bring them to the negotiating table? That is our goal. Don't do anything to derail it. And this is what, unfortunately, Zelenskyy did - he turned every question around," Rubio said.

The diplomat also spoke about security guarantees for Ukraine, which Zelenskyy insisted on in the Oval Office. Rubio said that it is first necessary to engage with Russia "to see if this is even possible," and only then talk about security guarantees.

Finally, the secretary of state expressed hope that the dialogue between the US and Ukraine could still be restarted and that Zelenskyy would "come to the realization" that the US is actually trying to help Ukraine and prevent more casualties in the war.
