France initiates discussions on protecting EU with French nuclear umbrella, - Macron

Macron on Europe’s nuclear defence

French President Emmanuel Macron said that he had decided to start discussions with EU leaders on the defence of the European continent by French nuclear weapons.

Macron said this during his address to the nation, Censor.NET reports.

"I appealed to the government to work as quickly as possible. New investments will involve private and public funds. Such nuclear deterrence measures will help us. They are French. Since the 60s, it has helped us to maintain security in Europe. I have also decided to start strategic discussions on our defence of the entire continent with our nuclear weapons. The decision will depend on the heads and commanders-in-chief of European countries," the French leader said.

In addition, Macron stressed the need to strengthen France's own defence capabilities.

"Our cooperation with the United States is important, but we need to strengthen our independence, especially when it comes to our security. We must increase our contributions to defence, and we have decided to increase funding for the production of tanks and helicopters in Europe. I have appealed to the government to provide this funding," the French President said.

Earlier, German CDU leader Friedrich Merz said it was necessary to discuss with the UK and France the possibility of Germany being under their nuclear protection.
