Main guarantee of Ukraine’s security is its people, - Costa

Ceasefire does not mean automatic peace: statement by Antonio Costa

President of the European Council Antonio Costa believes that the best security guarantees for Ukraine are Ukrainians themselves.

According to Censor.NET, citing Interfax-Ukraine, he said this at a press conference following a special meeting of the European Council.

"First of all, the best security guarantee is the Ukrainians themselves. Since 24 February 2022, the Ukrainian army has been resisting. Many people then believed that it was impossible to resist for more than three days, then more than three weeks. Now they have been resisting for over three years. And we have been supporting Ukraine from day one. And we will continue to do so even after the war," Costa said.

He noted that in the documents adopted as a result of the special meeting, ‘we decided in the conclusions that we would explore our possibilities under the treaty to contribute to security guarantees.’

"Of course, security guarantees for the future of Ukraine are important for the security of Europe, but also for international security. Because this war is not only about Ukraine. It's about respect for international law, respect for the rules-based international order, respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, secure borders. These are fundamental values enshrined in the UN Charter. This is a global problem," stated the President of the European Council.

In this regard, he expressed hope for ‘the support of all countries in the world in ensuring compliance with international law’. 'It is quite clear that international law must prevail, and the war must be defeated," Costa said.
