France refuses from demilitarisation of Ukraine - Lecornu

Lecornu on Europe’s investment in its security

French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu said that Europe should reject calls for the demilitarisation of Ukraine.

This is reported by The Guardian, Censor.NET informs.

According to him, a well-armed Ukraine will be an important part of the future security architecture. France rejects any attempts to demilitarise the Ukrainian army, as this could harm its ability to defend itself.

Lecornu made these remarks at the opening of the Paris Defence and Strategy Forum on 11 March, where more than 30 heads of armies gathered to discuss support for Ukraine in the framework of a peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia. The forum was an important platform for discussing how Europe and the West can ensure peace and security in Ukraine.

The Minister noted that Europe is going through a ‘new period’ in its history, which is different from both the Cold War and the ‘period of peace dividends’, when world powers were actively fighting for influence.

Lecornu also drew attention to the role of the new US administration and the importance of discussing how NATO and the West can protect the eastern flank, especially if some countries reduce their contribution to European security.

Regarding the future of the ceasefire in Ukraine, Lecornu stressed the need for careful planning, as Russia has a history of not respecting peace agreements.
