Trump is right that before you can maintain peace, you must first achieve it, - Rutte

Rutte on achieving peace and security guarantees

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of working in parallel on both a peace agreement and a future peacekeeping mission: when there is a peace agreement, peace guarantees are needed.

He said this during a press conference during a working visit to Kosovo, Interfax-Ukraine reports, Censor.NET informs.

According to Rutte, U.S. President Donald Trump is right that before you can maintain peace, you must first achieve peace. At the same time, he believes that it is necessary to work on a peace agreement and security guarantees in parallel.

"I think President Trump is right that before you can maintain peace, you have to achieve peace first. And there is no peace yet. But at the same time, we all agree that we need to work in parallel, because when there is a ceasefire or a peace agreement, you have to be sure that you can somehow guarantee this peace. And one of the models for this is what the French and the British are working on with many other countries. And this conversation is important, and it's also closely linked to the United States. But again, in President Trump's view, a peace deal first, before we can keep us," Rutte said.

The Alliance Secretary General also emphasized the importance of the Franco-UK initiative on a peacekeeping mission.

"It is good that the French and the British have taken the initiative to ensure that when there is a peace agreement or a ceasefire in Ukraine, it will be a matter of security guarantees. One way to do this would be to have European troops in Ukraine. But there may be other ways to do it," the official said.

He also praised Trump's efforts:

"I really want to point out that thanks to him, there has now been a breakthrough on Ukraine in terms of starting negotiations with both the Russians and the Ukrainians. This is important."
