Suspect in Hanul Shalaiev’s murder was undergoing treatment for long time and did not return from vacation - 28th Brigade

The suspect in the murder of civil society activist Demian Hanul, soldier Serhii Shalaiev, was always undergoing treatment and was not involved in combat missions after his transfer to the brigade.
This was reported by the press center of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Censor.NET reports.
"The crime that took place in Odesa shocked everyone. There is no justification for this. The suspect, Senior Lieutenant Shalaiev Serhii Serhiiovych, was transferred on 13.07.2024 from military unit A0139 and admitted to the reserve company officer's TCR. After the transfer, he was treated almost all the time. He was not involved in the area of combat missions," the statement said.
It is also noted that the suspect did not return from vacation to the place of service and is considered to be in the UAP since February 22, 2025.
"All the necessary information has been provided to law enforcement agencies. This shameful crime will definitely be solved and the perpetrator must be punished with the most severe punishment. All necessary information regarding this crime will be reported. The brigade continues to deter and destroy the enemy in the Toretsk sector," the brigade summarized and expressed condolences to the family and friends of Demian Hanul.

As reported, the Land Forces said that the suspect in Hanul's murder was a deserter.
