Germany to increase military aid to Ukraine up to €7bn - Scholz

Scholz promises to increase military aid to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin would increase military aid to Ukraine up to 7 billion euros.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to Interfax-Ukraine.

He recalled that this week the Bundestag passed "a very comprehensive amendment to our constitution, which will allow us to finance what is needed to defend our country, to cooperate in Europe on defence, and for the military assistance we need to mobilise for Ukraine."

"And tomorrow, I hope, it is likely that the Federal Council in Germany will also make this decision, so we will now have the freedom to do whatever we need to do as a great power in the heart of Europe. This will also include, by the way, that once the decisions are made, we will initiate a further increase in our military assistance to Ukraine. In total, it will be seven billion. Four are already planned, and three more will be added. Therefore, this year, as well as last year, Germany is and will remain the biggest supporter of Ukraine in Europe," the Chancellor said.

Scholz is convinced that it is important that "Ukraine remains an independent, sovereign and democratic state, that it can continue its path to membership in the European Union and that it has its own strong army even after the peace agreement".

"These are things that we have to ensure," he added.
