Representatives of Donald Trump's administration have assured European countries that the US will not remove the "nuclear umbrella" over the EU.
This is reported by The New York Times, Censor.NET informs.
Thus, the authors of the material stated that the United States assured European allies of Trump's support for NATO.
According to them, the US leader will keep the US "nuclear umbrella" over Europe and remain committed to the principle of collective defence.
However "Trump’s views are famously changeable, and he persists in viewing NATO as a club where members pay for American protection."
This month, the US leader reiterated his demand for allies to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP. At the same time, the US spends about 3.4% of its GDP on the armed forces.
