Meloni proposes extending NATO mutual defense to Ukraine without joining Alliance - FT

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni opposed the idea of deploying a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine, calling it too complicated and risky.
She said this in an interview with the Financial Times, Censor.NET reports.
Instead, she proposed an alternative approach - to extend the principles of NATO's collective defense to Ukraine without its official membership.
"It would be simpler and more effective than other ideas that are on the table," Meloni said.
According to her, this format should not provoke Russia unless Moscow is planning a new invasion. "But if they see it as a bigger threat, without Ukraine in NATO, then that means we can't trust any peace signed with Russia, because if Russia really doesn't want to invade Ukraine again, why should they say no?" she emphasized.
Meloni also said that she will present her plan to the US presidential administration and seeks to prevent disagreements between Washington and the EU on security issues.
In addition, the prime minister expressed the opinion that under Donald Trump's presidency, Russia would not dare to launch a new attack on Ukraine, but such a threat may appear after his term is over.
