How to return after AWOL or deserting: SBI explains updated procedure

As of 1 March 2025, an updated procedure has come into effect for servicemembers who have gone AWOL (Absent Without Leave).
This was reported by the press service of the Ground Forces, Censor.NET reports.
AWOL up to 3 days
- Criminal proceedings are not initiated;
- The servicemember may return to the unit they left;
- Upon return, monetary allowances and all other types of support — including food and clothing supplies — are reinstated.
If the AWOL period exceeds three days
and it is a first-time offense, and the servicemember wishes to return to duty:
- A criminal case is opened;
- The servicemember must personally contact the commander (or head) of their military unit or institution via the Army+ app and obtain written consent to resume military service;
- The servicemember submits a motion to the prosecutor, the pre-trial investigation body (SBI or National Police), or the court, expressing their intention to return to service and attaching the written consent from the commander;
- The case materials are forwarded to the court to initiate the procedure for releasing the servicemember from criminal liability. The court then makes a ruling;
- The servicemember provides the court decision to the commander and returns to duty.
The offense is repeated or the serviceman does not want to return to service:
- Criminal proceedings are initiated;
- The serviceman is searched for and detained;
- A measure of restraint is imposed on the serviceman;
- An indictment is sent to the court;
- The court passes a sentence (the penalty for going AWOL is imprisonment for 5 to 10 years).
