I want Iran to prosper, but US will not allow it to have nuclear weapons - Trump

US President Donald Trump said he wants Iran to prosper, but the US will not allow the country to have nuclear weapons.
He said this to journalists at the White House on Wednesday, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.
"I want them to prosper. I want Iran to be great (as a state - ed.). The only thing they cannot have is nuclear weapons," the American leader said.
He added that Tehran also understands this.
Trump made his statement ahead of this week's indirect talks in Oman between the US and Iranian delegations, as well as after Washington announced on Wednesday that it would impose new sanctions on Iran.
At the same time, the head of the White House noted that the United States was ready to take a military step if necessary.
Trump also admitted that Israel could be involved in this case.
The US wants to reach a nuclear deal with Iran
Earlier it was reported that President Donald Trump said he wanted to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran. He sent a letter proposing such negotiations to Iran's leader.
Bloomberg reported that Trump had asked Russian dictator Putin to help in nuclear negotiations with Iran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that negotiations with the United States would be held only if the United States treats Tehran with respect.
Iranian President Massoud Peseshkian said he would not negotiate with the United States when he is threatened.
Iran is cautiously approaching the talks with the United States on its nuclear programme, which are due to take place on 12 April. Tehran does not believe in their progress and is suspicious of the US intentions.
