Russia lost naval base in Mediterranean Sea - Pletenchuk

Pletenchuk

Russia no longer has a full-fledged naval base in the Mediterranean Sea, and its presence in the region has become much more difficult after the loss of the base in Tartus.

This was announced by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Captain 3rd Rank Dmytro Pletenchuk, Censor.NET reports with reference to Ukrinform.

"Russia is still present in the Mediterranean Sea and is even trying to conduct some kind of training, although it looks very interesting now. In fact, it is now a foreign water area for them. Of course, there are friendly regimes in Africa, there are even ports where they periodically go for bunkering, so they can even be serviced there, but they do not have a base as such. And, of course, they are trying to demonstrate their flag and military presence there as another factor of destabilization and geopolitical influence," Pletenchuk emphasized.

Despite attempts to conduct exercises and demonstrate military force, the lack of its own base significantly complicates the logistics of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean.

Pletenchuk emphasized that Moscow's interest in the region has not disappeared - Russia will continue to try to maintain at least a symbolic presence in the Mediterranean, in particular through African ports.

"This is a completely different scenario than when they were based in the Syrian Republic. They still have interests there. Africa is also one of their priorities, and they will still be there from time to time because it is their area of interest," he added.
