Moldova is withdrawing from CIS: Parliament has denounced key documents

The Moldovan Parliament has voted to withdraw from the CIS, denouncing the organization’s founding agreements and charter.
According to Censor.NET, citing European Pravda, this was reported by the press service of the Moldovan Parliament.
Reasons for the decision
Officials in Chisinau claim that the CIS has lost its original purpose and that the organization’s fundamental principles are no longer being upheld.
"The CIS’s fundamental values and principles are no longer being upheld, and the organization itself has lost its raison d’être," the Foreign Ministry stated.
The main argument for denouncing the agreements is the actions of the Russian Federation, which, in Moldova’s view, contradict the principles of international law. In particular, the main argument for denouncing the agreements is the actions of the Russian Federation, which, in Moldova’s view, contradict the principles of international law.
Chisinau points out:
- a full-scale war against Ukraine;
- aggression against Georgia;
- the presence of Russian troops in the Transnistria region of Moldova itself.
A course toward the European Union
The termination of the agreements is described as part of the country’s path toward integration into the European Union.
Officials in Chisinau also emphasize that the withdrawal will lead to cost savings of approximately 3.1 million lei annually (over 150,000 euros).
What is next?
Relations with CIS member states will continue on bilateral and multilateral platforms following the denunciation, and Moldova will remain a party to a number of CIS treaties, particularly in the trade, economic, and social spheres.
To date, Moldova has denounced approximately 70 agreements with the CIS as part of an ongoing process of aligning national policy and modernizing the country’s legislative and economic framework in accordance with EU standards and norms.
