The Security Service’s counter-intelligence unit has detained another Russian military intelligence agent in the Donetsk region. The suspect was guiding Russian-controlled guided aerial bombs and strike drones in the Sloviansk area.
This was reported by the SSU press office, as relayed by Censor.NET.
The investigation revealed that the spotter was a resident of a frontline village who had been recruited by the enemy and was evading mobilisation.
He came to the attention of the Russian security services due to anti-Ukrainian comments he posted in Telegram chat groups, whilst rarely leaving his home.
After being recruited, the perpetrator began subtly questioning his wife about the locations of Ukrainian troops, which she might have seen whilst in Sloviansk and neighbouring areas.
He stored the information he gathered on his own smartphone in the form of approximate markers on Google Maps for subsequent ‘reporting’ to the Russians.
It has been established that the agent was in contact with the Russian GRU via a ‘liaison officer’ from the Joint Strategic Command of the Moscow Military District.
They used a popular messaging app with anonymous accounts to communicate with one another.
SSU officers exposed the agent at the early stage of his work for the GRU, documented his espionage activities and detained him at his place of residence.
A mobile phone and a tablet containing evidence of his work for the enemy were seized from the suspect.
The suspect is being held in custody without the right to bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
