Pope’s envoy Zuppi heads to Russia: will discuss war in Ukraine
Papal envoy Cardinal Matteo Zuppi will visit Russia in late September for talks on peace in Ukraine. During the visit, he will discuss humanitarian issues related to the war in Ukraine with Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi was appointed the Holy See’s peace envoy for Ukraine by Pope Francis.
He last visited Moscow in October 2024. At the time, he held talks on family reunification, prisoner-of-war exchanges and prospects for dialogue on ending the war.
Zelenskyy names condition for diplomatic talks
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that Ukraine was ready to halt at the current line of contact and begin diplomatic talks if Russia agreed to an unconditional ceasefire.
He said this in an interview with CBC News.
The Ukrainian president explained that this would involve halting hostilities along the line of contact and moving the matter into the diplomatic arena with mediation by certain partners.
"Yes, we are ready for this. If the Russians are ready for a ceasefire—yes, without conditions, simply a ceasefire and negotiations," Zelenskyy said.
According to him, if Russia subsequently decides to continue the war, that will be its choice. At the same time, Zelenskyy stressed that the better option would be to stop the war without further losses and proceed to a diplomatic settlement.
