Drunk man fired shots from balcony in Kyiv: he was detained, - police. PHOTO

Police in the capital have arrested a Kyiv resident who fired shots from the balcony of a high-rise block. The man, who was under the influence of alcohol, fired three shots from a starter pistol, causing alarm amongst local residents. He faces up to five years’ imprisonment for his actions.

It is reported that the Dnipro Police Department in Kyiv received a report from passers-by that an unidentified man was firing shots from the balcony of one of the residential blocks. Officers from Special Purpose Police Regiment No. 2 and an investigative team arrived at the scene immediately.

Law enforcement officers quickly identified the flat from which the shots were fired and detained the offender in accordance with Article 298-2 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The man was under the influence of alcohol

It transpired that the man, whilst on the eighth-floor balcony, took out a signal pistol and fired three shots into the air. The detainee was unable to explain the motives behind his actions, as he was under the influence of alcohol – a breathalyser test using a ‘Dräger’ device showed a blood alcohol level of 1.53 per mille.

Law enforcement officers seized the weapon and informed the detainee that he was suspected of an offence under Part 1 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – hooliganism. The penalty for this offence carries a sentence of up to five years’ restricted liberty.
