New search operations have begun in Poland to locate burial sites of Ukrainians who lost their lives

Search operations in the village of Laskova, Poland

On 6 October in Poland, in the village of Lasków in the Lublin Voivodeship, the second round of search operations – following a long hiatus – began to locate the burial sites of Ukrainians who died or went missing during the Second World War.

This has been reported by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, according to Censor.NET.

More about the search

The investigations are being carried out in accordance with the agreements reached following the work of the Ukrainian-Polish Working Group on Decent Burials.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance is organising the search operations. The work will be carried out by ‘Dolia’, a municipal enterprise of the Lviv Regional Council responsible for locating the graves of participants in the national liberation struggle and victims of wars, deportations and political repression.

They pointed out that the ‘Dolia’ public organisation had received the relevant permission from the Polish authorities on 31 August 2026 to carry out an expedition on the grounds of the Orthodox cemetery in the village of Laskov, in the Lublin Voivodeship.

  • The aim of the search operations is to locate the burial sites of the civilian inhabitants of Laskiv who were killed as a result of the attack by units of the Home Army and the Peasant Battalions in March 1944.
  • According to various historical sources, more than 300 people were killed during the mass murder of Ukrainians in Laskiv on 10 March 1944. Research carried out by historians and experts from Ukraine and Poland has established that 327 residents of Laskiv were killed in 1944.

At the same time, some historians put the death toll at a higher figure — around 350 people. The final death toll may be clarified as a result of further historical and investigative research.

What led up to it?

This is the second search operation that the Ukrainian side has carried out on Polish territory following a lengthy hiatus. In the autumn of 2025, the first Ukrainian search and exhumation expedition took place, conducted on the basis of an official permit from the Polish authorities. The work was carried out in the village of Yurechkova.

The Institute added that the search operations are aimed at restoring historical justice, identifying burial sites and honouring the memory of the fallen Ukrainians in a fitting manner.
