People killed in Pryluky by direct hit from Kh-101 missile. This is Putin’s "gift" to himself on his birthday – Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy: Russian attack kills 25, including 19 in Pryluky

A massive Russian attack on Ukraine on 7 October killed 25 people and wounded another 100. The highest death toll was in Pryluky, where a Kh-101 missile directly hit a building, killing 19 people, including five young children.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in his evening address, according to Censor.NET.

Tragedy in Pryluky

According to the president, rubble clearance continued throughout the day following the strike on Pryluky. Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those killed.

Overall, he said, it was a combined attack involving large numbers of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and "Shaheds". Further strikes with "Shaheds" and aerial bombs were also carried out against Ukraine during the day.

Birthday "gift"

"This is the ‘gift’ Putin gave himself for his birthday. Killing children, killing people," Zelenskyy stressed.

He urged leaders not to remain silent about what had happened and what happens every day, or about Russia’s intention, according to him, to pursue further escalation, killings and strikes. In the president’s view, Putin does not feel that this creates real problems for him.

Air defence results

  • In a single night, Ukrainian troops shot down 44 missiles, both cruise and ballistic, but not all of them. Ballistic missiles were particularly difficult to counter. They also neutralised 117 "Shaheds" — most of them, but again, not all.

Appeal to partners

Zelenskyy stressed that additional packages of interceptor missiles and further measures to support Ukraine are needed. Such packages will be provided, he said. The threat exists every day, and air defence batteries must have missiles every day.

"We are counting heavily on prompt deliveries from our partners. On sufficient production. We are in constant contact with everyone who makes the decisions. The delivery schedule must be met," the president said.

He thanked everyone helping Ukraine and honoured the memory of all those whose lives were taken by the Russians.

Russian strike on Pryluky on 7 October

  • As a reminder, on 7 October, Russia carried out a missile strike on Pryluky, Chernihiv region. Eighteen people are known to have been killed and 55 injured. Children are among the dead.
  • Other residential buildings, a children’s and youth creativity centre, a business and vehicles were also damaged in the city.
  • According to Chernihiv Regional Military Administration head Viacheslav Chaus, the Russians struck Pryluky with six cruise missiles, provisionally identified as Kh-101s.
  • Days of mourning for those killed were declared in Pryluky on 7, 8 and 9 October.
