The German company Quantum Systems plans to supply tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered drones.
According to Censor.NET, which cites Ukrinform, this was stated by Matthias Lena, vice president of Quantum Systems.
What is known?
"Over the weekend, a LOI (letter of intent—ed.) was signed to secure a package of tens of thousands of SPYS, which, as has already been mentioned, are capable of shooting down jet-powered drones," he said.
This refers to a joint development by Quantum Systems and its Ukrainian partner, WIY. During the development of SPYS, the company’s experience in deploying its products—in particular, the STRILA interceptor drone—directly in Ukraine was taken into account.
Lena noted that the effectiveness of efforts to counter Russian jet drones in Ukraine has increased significantly in recent times.
"At first, we observed an interception rate in Ukraine that was very low. Then it rose to over 30%, and in recent nights it has risen to over 50%," he explained.
However, he noted that this figure is the result of a combination of various countermeasures, not just the use of interceptor drones.
"But this is a combination of various measures. Ukraine has also adapted, mobilized various capabilities, and is making extensive use of its fleet of F-16s, which are capable of intercepting Shahed drones. And it is increasingly relying on technologies developed by companies like ours, which are proving increasingly effective within this suite of capabilities for countering the new threat," added the representative of Quantum Systems.
As SPYS scales up production, the company can also rely on the existing production facilities for STRILA interceptor drones.
"And I'm talking about several thousand a month," Lena said, referring to potential production volumes.
According to him, thousands of SPYS units are ready for delivery as early as this year.
