US senators on Trump’s authorisation to buy Russian diesel: This is complete betrayal of Ukraine

Trump has authorised the purchase of Russian diesel for six months: senators are outraged

US Democratic senators have criticised the Donald Trump administration’s decision to allow the purchase of Russian diesel fuel for six months. They stated that this harms Ukraine and weakens the pressure of sanctions on Russia.

According to Censor.NET, this is set out in a joint statement published on the website of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

The statement was signed by Senator Jean Shaheen, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The senators criticised Trump’s decision regarding Russian diesel

This refers to General Licence 135, which the US Treasury Department issued following an agreement between Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"President Trump’s announcement that the United States will allow the purchase of Russian diesel worldwide for six months is a complete betrayal of Ukraine, our European allies and America’s national security," the statement reads.

The Democrats have linked the Trump administration’s decision to rising fuel prices in the US and Europe against the backdrop of the war with Iran. In their view, the president is attempting to rectify the situation through deals with Russia, sacrificing the interests of Ukraine and its allies for the sake of his own political prospects.

Democrats have accused Trump of easing sanctions against Russia

Separately, senators stated that the presidential administration’s decision disregards legislation and the bipartisan stance of the US Congress.

They noted that just a few weeks ago, lawmakers passed a bill aimed at curbing the revenue of the Russian military machine and restricting the purchase of Russian energy resources.

The senators called on Trump to focus on ending the war with Iran, rather than on measures which, in their view, could support the financing of Russian aggression.

"Enough is enough. The President must end his war with Iran, not fund Russia’s military machine. Putin responds only to force, and that means tough action against Russia and those who help it wage war against Ukraine," the authors of the statement emphasised.
