Ukraine launches pilot project for medical drone deliveries

Ukraine is launching a pilot project using drones for medical logistics. The Heart Institute of Ukraine's Ministry of Health will be the first site. The drones will be able to deliver medicines, medical devices, blood samples, and donor organs between hospitals, reducing transport times.

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi announced this, Censor.NET reports.

The Heart Institute of Ukraine's Ministry of Health will be the project's first site. The facility already has three specialised drones capable of travelling up to 700 km and landing at hospital sites.

How deliveries will work

A clear procedure has been established for coordinating delivery flights with the military. The drones will have special status and will be identifiable in the air. Procedures for responding to air raid alerts have also been defined, including the option of landing at an alternative location.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Digital Transformation. Plans include using it as the basis for a Ukrainian unmanned aircraft traffic management system (UTM) and establishing rules for the safe use of civilian drones.

The advantage of drones

During wartime and amid difficult road conditions, transporting medical supplies by car can consume time critical to saving lives. This is particularly true for transplantation, where delivery speed is crucial. Drones will be able to deliver medicines, medical devices, blood samples for testing, and donor organs between hospitals more quickly, including from remote areas.
