On Friday, 30 October, at around 9.00 am, an explosion occurred at the El Fargue ammunition factory near the Spanish city of Granada. Three people sustained minor injuries, and the factory has temporarily suspended operations.
This was reported by the Spanish newspaper ABC, citing the emergency services and the police, according to Censor.NET.
According to the 112 emergency service, the explosion occurred in a designated area for gunpowder production. The first reports of a powerful explosion came in at around 9.00 am.
Initially, the Spanish National Police reported two casualties. Subsequently, the emergency services clarified that three people had been injured. All three suffered minor hearing damage and were taken to hospital for examination.
What is known about the circumstances of the explosion
According to the UGT trade union, the explosion occurred during a routine test, which is carried out regularly at the plant. The area where the work was taking place was cordoned off, and there were no people nearby.
Police, firefighters and TEDAX bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers established two security perimeters to ensure the emergency services could carry out their work.
The police stated that the cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. According to the 112 emergency service, there was no serious or structural damage to neighbouring buildings. Traffic on the road connecting Granada to the A-92 motorway was not restricted.
Following the incident, the factory, which employs around 300 people, was closed for the remainder of the working day.
The factory manufactures ammunition for Ukraine
El Fargue is owned by the Slovak company MSM Group. Following the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the plant focused a significant part of its operations on the production of ammunition of various calibres and missile components for supply to Ukraine.
According to ABC, the factory is currently expanding production, although the possibility of closing it had previously been considered. Strict security measures are in place at the facility: staff undergo daily checks, and the use of mobile phones on the premises is prohibited.
This is the second incident involving the factory in just over two weeks.
On 13 October, a lorry carrying mortar ammunition overturned near the plant. At the time, the Andalusian authorities declared a preliminary state of emergency, closed the road and evacuated residents from several nearby houses. No one was injured.
