All servicemen in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka are safe, review ordered, says Reshetylova

Reshetylova announces review of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka events

The Office of the Military Ombudsman is working alongside the command of the National Guard of Ukraine at the scene of the events that took place in the village of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka on 2 November.

Military Ombudswoman Olha Reshetylova reported this, according to Censor.NET.

What Reshetylova said

According to her, a review has been ordered to establish all the circumstances.

"We are also counting on engagement and cooperation from law enforcement agencies and the Security Service of Ukraine," the ombudswoman said.

New details of the clash

According to media reports from the scene, around 50 people gathered outside the house in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka. They say those being held inside include mobilised personnel as well as servicemen who have gone absent without leave.

According to law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene, the house is used to accommodate servicemen during their training.

Deputy National Guard Commander Volodymyr Hordiichuk said the National Guard rents the house because housing personnel on military bases is currently unsafe.

One woman, Rita, said her son was inside the house, having been detained by a military recruitment centre on his way to work. During the clashes, she managed to enter the house. Afterwards, she said her son was "all right" and that around 20 people were inside in total.

Background

  • Earlier, reports circulated online alleging that on 2 November, armed individuals were holding around 40 hostages in the basement of a house in the village of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka near Kyiv. Some were reportedly in serious condition, and medics were being denied access to them.
  • According to Kyiv region police, a private ambulance crew contacted them after being prevented from reaching one person.
  • Police said that reports of people being unlawfully detained in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka and of one of them having died were untrue.
  • NGU Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko confirmed that National Guard servicemen who had gone absent without leave were in the house. Four of them needed medical assistance and were sent to hospital.
  • Pivnenko also said that the private house was being used as a temporary accommodation site for National Guard servicemen. Mobilised personnel arrived there, underwent processing and checks, and were then sent to a training centre.
