UN delegation gains access to all SBU premises across Ukraine

On Sept. 9, 2016, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) took part in the final meeting following the results of the visit to Ukraine of the delegation of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT).

"Head of the UN delegation Mr Malcolm Evans noted the significant progress reached in Ukraine since the delegation's last visit in May this year. In particular, he stressed a high level of interaction with the Security Service of Ukraine.

"The delegation was granted unhindered and immediate access to all the SBU premises in various regions across the country as well as instructions on treating persons engaged in legal proceedings.

"The head of the UN delegation received up-to-date information about Ukrainian citizens illegally held by representatives of the so-called "DPR" and "LPR."

"The delegation was also provided with the testimony of liberated people who underwent tortures and were forcibly held in the temporarily uncontrolled territory of Ukraine.

"Malcolm Evans stressed that the access to the terrorist-held areas remains a challenge. The UN delegation had difficulties trying to assess the conditions of detention of persons deprived of liberty in these areas.

"Finally, the sides reached an agreement on further cooperation," the statement reads, as translated from Ukrainian by Censor.NET.
