Russia's Progress cargo ship crashes shortly upon launch

A Russian Progress cargo ship loaded with more than 2.5 tons of propellant and supplies bound for the International Space Station suffered a malfunction of some sort toward the end of its climb to space atop a Soyuz booster Thursday.
The initial phases of the flight appeared to go smoothly and at the third stage engine ignited as planned to finish the boost to orbit.
But about two minutes before the planned end of the upper stage burn, a malfunction of some sort occurred. Telemetry indicated the booster may have shut down early.
The supply carrier's manifest included some two tons of cargo, including rocket fuel, food, water and a new spacesuit.
Thursday's failure would be the third for a Russian Progress freighter since station assembly began in 1998 and the fifth such failure overall, including the loss of two U.S. cargo ships in 2014 and 2015.
