NBU may initiate sanctions against Russia's Sberbank
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has reacted to media reports about the readiness of Sberbank of Russia to service the holders of "passports" issued by the self-proclaimed "Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics."
Censor.NET reports citing the NBU press service."Should this information be confirmed, the NBU will address the National Security and Defense Council with a request to apply sanctions to the subsidiary of Sberbank of Russia in Ukraine - Sberbank PJSC," the NBU said.
The National Bank recalled that in accordance with article 5 of the law of Ukraine on sanctions, the decision to impose penalties on individual legal entities is adopted by the National Security and Defense Council and enacted by a decree of the president of Ukraine.
Earlier, Russian media reported that Sberbank of Russia had began to service clients with "passports" of the so-called "DPR" and "LPR" in pursuance of the relevant decree of the Russian president on the recognition of these pseudo-documents.
On Feb. 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the recognition of documents issued to the citizens of Ukraine and stateless persons living in the territory of certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
President Petro Poroshenko said he regarded such move as another proof of Russia's occupation and violation of international law.
The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine declared that the recognition of "DPR/LPR" documents by Russia contradicts the goals of the Minsk agreements.
