Shmyhal discusses training of Ukrainian military and defense industry support with Latvian Speaker Mierina. PHOTOS

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal met with representatives of the Saeima of Latvia, led by Speaker Daiga Mierina, to discuss a number of important issues, including military support for Ukraine and the development of the defence industry.

The head of government said this on Telegram, Censor.NET reports.

"I had an intense meeting with representatives of the Saeima of Latvia, headed by Speaker Daiga Mierina. I am deeply grateful to Latvia for its military and technical assistance to Ukraine. We have already provided weapons, ammunition and military goods worth more than EUR 501 million. We discussed support for Ukraine's defence industry based on the Danish model and the continuation of training programmes for the Ukrainian military," Shmyhal said.

The main topics of the meeting also included support for the Ukrainian defence industry based on the Danish model, as well as the continuation of training programmes for the Ukrainian military. Shmyhal stressed the importance of these initiatives for improving the effectiveness of the Ukrainian army.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Ukraine discussed with the Latvian side the possibility of strengthening sanctions against Russia, in particular, restrictions on the nuclear industry and the fight against the Russian "shadow fleet". "I am grateful to Latvia for its active support of this initiative," he added.

The parties also discussed the creation of a reliable and cost-effective transport corridor between Ukraine and the Baltic States. Mr Shmyhal expressed his belief that the launch of the Rail Baltica project will contribute to the development of this area.
